Student's Role in Climate Action
At Gauhati University as the sun blazed down, prompting laughter about needing SPF just to survive among my peers, yet beneath the humor lies a critical truth of today: Climate change is an important issue we can’t ignore. Rising temperatures, extreme weather and biodiversity loss threaten our future. As Gen Z, we have the power to drive change through clean ups, recycling initiatives and raising awareness. Let’s take action to cool things down both literally and figuratively!!
We all can join hands together in taking the slightest initiative to make the biggest of change for us.”

Student’s ideas and point of view serves as an important role in the society towards climate action, as they’re entitled as the key to success. When a student learns about climate change in every subject area, they’re going to move forward knowing how to solve the problems using critical thinking and would really think about their choices when it comes to environmental awareness. It certainly can be overwhelming for students because they are the generation that’s going to be impacted the most but learning about it can be a powerful way to overcome that. Climate change is a multifaced problem and requires efforts in all directions to tackle down and minimise its detrimental impacts. With the mindset of, ‘MICRO CHANGES LEADING TO MACRO IMPACT’ students can really come in front and serve as role models!”
Adults keep saying: “We owe it to the young people to give them hope.” But I don’t want your hope. I don’t want you to be hopeful. I want you to panic. I want you to feel the fear I feel every day. And then I want you to act. I want you to act as you would in a crisis. I want you to act as if the house is on fire. Because it is."
Greta Thunberg's words resonate best with the rage the youth of today feel with the atrocities being committed on our mother nature and hence ultimately our future.
How are we expected to be the hope and building blocks of the community if our future is being painted black as the days go by, by some irresponsible and selfish members of the society?
But we are the youth, the embodiment of courage, knowledge and zeal to make things right. I believe through social media, increase in environmental literacy and awareness and global campaigns our youth is taking to the forefront to prevent any more damage to our environment. They are willing to adopt and implement sustainable lifestyles and are bringing about innovative solutions through the advancement in technology and science. They have comprehended the intensity of the problem and are playing leading roles in obliterating them.
Because if we won't then who will?”

In the face of climate crisis, students embody the spirit of possibility. Their role is not just to inherit the earth but to redefine it. Every protest, project, and choice for sustainability is a step towards a world that refuses to succumb to apathy, proving that change is within reach. Students symbolise the belief that the earth is worth saving and that their actions, however small, can rewrite its story.”
As a bioengineering student, I will be working to innovate with eco drones to monitor wildlife, develop smart sensors for forest, and promote recycling on campus. By combining my tech skills with community efforts like Hargila Desk, I aim to make a real impact. I am committed to adopting sustainable practices and striving for a greener future for all, ensuring a healthier planet for our future generations..”

“As a student, I recognize that our actions are not just virtuous, but it's a necessary need for us. My environmental awakening began in grade 7th due to a quiz organized by WWF, and since then it's been a never-ending saga of me educating myself about the ongoing climate crisis. From self-educating to starting my school's first eco club with my best friends back in grade 9 to co-hosting our very own podcast called Xeujjya Talks, where we discuss how students can lead a sustainable green life and be a change in society.
I believe students should speak out whenever they witness environmental wrongdoing, whether it's littering, using single-use plastics, or harming nature in other ways. Students' roles may be humble, but the results are profoundly substantial. Planet Earth has always been humble to us, so let's honor her with sustainability and care!”
They say ”mere drops make an ocean”; as I stand by that quote, I believe us students can take a very similar approach while contributing optimistically towards climate action.
We start simple - say a habit of carrying one’s own water bottle, using a reusable shopping bag, buying product refills instead of a new package, or perhaps joining such awareness clubs! It all works as long as we do it genuinely and inspire others to do the same.
Also, it’s the zeal that matters, so do your research and find where your piece of the puzzle fits in. And if it feels as if your contribution is rather small compared to the others, read the first line again! ☺”

As students are more prone to the new developed technologies they have the power to support and deny the needed innovation that might harm the environment. If students or the upcoming generations resist certain harmful modern technologies/innovations then these harmful causes will not be able to win or sustain for a longer duration in the future.
Hence forth, if students as a whole become responsible for mother Earth and start inspecting between the needed and the irrelevant technologies it can create a lot of change for the climate, environment and nature.”
